Today, we celebrate senior Sunday with our Radite Students and hear Chip Paul, our Student Pastor, deliver a powerful sermon about chasing God’s presence over our purpose. What does it truly mean to experience God's presence? Through the story of Moses leading the people of Israel, we learn the difference between presence and purpose. In the stillness of His presence, we can find clarity and direction for our purpose. It’s His presence that sets us apart from the rest of the world.
Are you experiencing the presence of God? Are you finding your purpose inside His presence? As always, we’d love to take the time to answer any questions you have about Jesus, so reach out today. Take the next step in your faith journey by visiting burnthickory.com/next.

  • Blessed Assurance | Worldly Love

    Episode  |  April 28th, 2024  |  40 mins 20 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

We continue our sermon series Blessed Assurance, where we explore the idea of finding assurance of our salvation through scripture. Today, we look at 1 John 2, where John instructs us not to love the world. The three categories of worldly lusts are the flesh, the eyes, and the pride of life. These are our appetites, affections, and accomplishments—the lusts that operate in open rebellion against God’s love and His commands. True salvation is when God’s glory takes on the ultimate weight of your heart, and you quit putting the weight on the lusts of the flesh, eyes, and the pride of life. The way we lessen these is to embrace the love of God fully.
What worldly love do you need to stop pursuing? What’s holding you back from embracing God's love today? As always, we’d love to connect with you, take the time to answer any questions you have, and pray with you. Take the next step in your faith journey by visiting burnthickory.com/next.

  • Blessed Assurance | Saving Faith Warnings

    Episode  |  April 21st, 2024  |  45 mins 15 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

Today, in our sermon series about having assurance in your faith, we explore the warning signs that your faith may not be genuine. A warning sign for someone might be continually and habitually sinning or if they try to believe but not repent. Another sign is that someone remains casual or openly embraces sin. One way that you can be assured that you know God is to live in an attitude of surrendering all to Him. Closeness to God does not make you feel more holy; it makes you feel dirtier, and you can be assured you know God if you have a deep awareness of your sin and allow Jesus to cover it.
Do you deny, rationalize, or hide sin? What’s keeping you from confessing your sin and repenting from it? Do you believe and understand the gospel? Do you have eternal confidence in resting in Jesus's finished work? Take time today to reach out. We’d love to answer any questions you’ve got and pray with you. You can have blessed assurance of faith in Jesus by taking the next step – visit burnthickory.com/next.

  • The Inconvenient Gospel

    Episode  |  April 7th, 2024  |  38 mins 52 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

We explore the story of the rich young ruler this week as we learn about the true implications of following the gospel. We see in Luke 9:24 that whoever wants to save their life will lose it. This seems like a contradiction to living, but we must abandon our attachment to this world. The cross is not just a symbol of suffering but, more importantly, of victory over sin and death. We have to realize that we have already been crucified with Christ if we have believed in Him. Our response is to act on the truth of the gospel. Romans 6 tells us, in the same way, to count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore, in light of God’s mercy, we should offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, because this is our true and proper worship.
Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? Does the inconvenience of the gospel inhibit you from following Him wholly? Do you have questions about Jesus? Reach out today! We’d love to take the time to answer any questions you’ve got and take time to pray with you. You can also find out more about the next step in your faith journey by visiting burnthickory.com/next.

  • Easter 2024 | The Resurrection Changes Everything!

    Episode  |  March 31st, 2024  |  33 mins 52 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

We celebrate Easter because the cross was not the end of the road for Jesus. He was crucified, dead, and buried in a tomb, and all hope seemed lost. And then, at dawn on Sunday, the tomb was found empty. An angel of the Lord told those looking for Him not to be afraid, for he knew that they were looking for Jesus, who was crucified. “He is not here; He is risen.” We celebrate a risen savior. God who became man for us, bore our debt for our sins on the cross, died and then defeated death, rose again, and now sits in heaven. Because of the truth of the resurrection, we know that our past is forgiven, our present is transformed, and our future is secure. Our hope comes from a risen Savior who is King of kings, Lord of lords, and gives us life because of His great sacrifice.
If you are seeking answers about who Jesus is and why the resurrection is so important, then watch this sermon. You can discover that hope for eternity, and salvation can come through accepting Jesus as Savior today! We would love to connect with you and help you take the next step in your faith journey. • Road To The Cross | The Crowds That Jesus Encounters

    Episode  |  March 24th, 2024  |  42 mins 33 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

It’s Palm Sunday, and we are following Jesus on the road to the cross as He enters Jerusalem surrounded by crowds. What we learn in today’s study of scripture is that we are represented in the different personas of the crowd. We might be concerned with what’s in it for us, but we need to question if the foundation of our relationship with Jesus is following His desires and glory or our glory. Maybe we think we are smarter than God, but we should be asking ourselves whose approval we truly live for. Maybe we are fickle, but we should be asking ourselves if our lives primarily display our own lordship or the Lordship of Jesus. Or are we following Jesus anywhere because He is God?
As we look to Easter and celebrate the Lord’s Supper one more time, take time to reflect both on Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross but also on your personal response to Him. What crowd do you fall in, and what is standing in the way of you accepting Jesus as Lord in your life? As always, if you’ve got questions or need prayer, we’d love to connect with you, pray with you, and answer any questions you have. • Road To The Cross | Jesus in My Place

    Episode  |  March 17th, 2024  |  45 mins 4 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

We continue our journey toward the cross this week as we follow Jesus through scripture. In Mark chapter 14, we learn of the account of the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus prays in distress, overwhelmed with what He will be facing in His death on the cross. You see, we have a Savior who has always and will always deeply care. He was not simply in agony over death but the burden of the wrath of God as He carried all our sins to the cross. He suffered in that moment, the equivalent of an eternity in hell, just for us. Our role is to recognize that Jesus is the only way and surrender to Him because He is Lord and to ask for His will, not ours.
What’s keeping you from being amazed that at Jeus’ darkest hour, you were on His mind? As you read Second Corinthians 5:21 – God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God – what stands in the way of you surrendering to Him as Lord? As always, if you’ve got questions, we’d love to take time to answer them and pray with you. If you’ve taken the next step in your faith journey, let us know by visiting burnthickory.com/next.

  • Road To The Cross | I Want To See

    Episode  |  March 10th, 2024  |  42 mins 39 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

Easter is right around the corner, and as we look towards the resurrection, our sermon series over the next few weeks will look at Christ’s road to the cross. We’ll follow His interactions and reflections through scripture as He was facing pain and death. As we study Mark’s account in chapter 10, we learn that the greatest moment of our lives is when we recognize, trust, and surrender to Jesus. Just as some in the crowd simply sat and ignored the call that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by, we, too, have the choice every day to either call out to Him or just sit with the crowd. The good news is that every cry for Jesus is heard by Him, no matter the level of the noise around you.
What obstacles are currently preventing you from wholeheartedly calling out and surrendering your life to Jesus? If you have surrendered to Him, what are some symptoms of spiritual blindness being exhibited in your life? As always, if you’ve got questions or need prayer, we’d love to connect with you and take time to answer those questions and pray with you. • Rethink Your Life | Saved to Serve

    Episode  |  March 3rd, 2024  |  42 mins 59 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

We wrap up our sermon series on rethinking our lives as we kick off our month-long 321 Serve initiative. All March, we encourage everyone at Burnt Hickory to serve the community and neighborhoods at least three times personally, twice as a family, and once as a LifeGroup. In today’s sermon, we look at why we are saved in the first place, and that’s to serve others. We see in scripture that Jesus came not to be served as a deserving King but to serve. He is calling us to do the same, to get off the throne of self-advancement and become a servant. In God’s kingdom, the standard of greatness is measured in service, not in authority or accomplishment.
What are you being called to as a servant? Are you following Jesus in His example of servanthood? What are you excited about as an opportunity for 321 Serve? As always, we’d love to connect with you, answer any questions you’ve got, and take time to pray with you. Reach out today! • Rethink Your Life | Temptation

    Episode  |  February 25th, 2024  |  42 mins 12 secs
baptist, bible, church, preaching, scripture, sermon

As we rethink our lives, we explore what scripture says about dealing with temptation. Temptation is anything that promises satisfaction at the cost of our obedience to God. As followers of Christ, we are not given immunity from our sinful temptations once we accept Jesus, and we should realize that it often comes when we least expect it. Our best line of defense is to avoid the temptation by avoiding common areas where we encounter it and to flee from it at all costs. We have to count the cost if we do fall into temptation and remember that every moment of resistance to temptation is a victory in our faith journey.
In light of this sermon, what are areas or people that you need to avoid in order to be victorious over temptation? How can you find support in being vulnerable with trusted Christians who can help you flee from temptation at any cost? As always, we'd love to connect with you, take time to answer any questions you've got and pray with you - especially over dealing with temptation.
