Making Our Own God Never Goes Well

This week, we delve into the pitfalls of idolatry. Drawing from the rich narratives in Exodus, we will examine how the Israelites' creation of the golden calf serves as a stark warning about the dangers of shaping God into our own image instead of worshipping Him as He truly is. We will reflect on how we, too, can fall into the trap of creating our own "gods" in times of uncertainty and stress, rebelling against the one true source of satisfaction for our souls.

This sermon will challenge us to trust in God’s revelation, even when circumstances are unclear, and to expose and surrender our idols to Christ. We will learn the importance of recognizing and fleeing from sin, understanding its inevitable consequences, and grounding our trust in the God revealed in Scripture, rather than in cultural or personal distortions.

Shipwrecks In The Shallows

Pastor Chip picks up the story of Elijah after the great showdown on the mountain, when God showed His power. Elijah’s life is threatened by one of Jezebel’s messengers, and Elijah becomes afraid and runs away to hide and even asks God to end his life. We see how a strong faith can be shipwrecked by not relying on God.

1 Kings 19:1-9
Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.” 3 Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” 6 He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” 8 So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. 9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

We are always worshiping something; you can’t turn it off. The real question to consider is “what” are you worshiping? As we dig into 1 Kings, we see that people where worshiping false gods and idols, and Pastor Matt shows us that in reality, we aren’t that different. Our idols look different than in the days of Elijah, but we are still trying to replace God’s rightful place in our hearts with objects, ideas, and people.

These idols are never fully reachable, and they're constantly upping the stakes of how to reach them and eventually push us toward self-destruction. What things are in place of God in your heart? The Church | The Church Worth Belonging To

Church is not an event. A church is not a necessarily a location. The church is the group of redeemed people that God wants to speak to and through, and as a result of that, the church is the hope of the world. The Church | Belong

Church is not a spectator sport. It is unlike anything else that you do on this planet, and something that God has called us to belong to put roots down in and be an active part, Its different than just attending an event. We are the Ekklesia - called out by God to band together as one people group under one purpose. We are also to be sanctified - cleansed and given a new start and to be made holy. Not onlyl forgiven, but separated for His purpose.

In Matthew 16:18 Jesus said, " And I tell you that you Peter, and on this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." Jesus not only started the church, He also loves it, and it's really hard to call yourself a Jesus follower and not be planted, rooted, and belonging to his church.
