Called To Serve

Our service to the King must be centered around some counter cultural truths:
That Jesus is the only savior worth following, that Jesus is the only pure example of what glorifies God, and that Jesus calls us to get of the throne of self-advancement and become a true servant.

In God's kingdom, the standard of greatness is measured in service, not in authority or in accomplishment. We see this throughout Mark as well as in Philippians...

Phil. 2:1-8 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!

Mark 10:43-45 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Why Trust God?

Pastor Alan opens scripture and shows us that we can take heart, and trust in God because His word, His nature, and His promises are unchanging and true. We are commanded to not look to our own understanding, comprehension, discernment, or insight, but to God’s. “Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord but serve the Lord with all your heart. Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart." – 1 Samuel 12:20

As we learn to surrender and trust in God’s will, we can learn to walk in His ways – the way Psalms 119:105 says – “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

2020 Christmas Eve | The Gift

Remember the anticipation as a child of what gifts would await us on Christmas morning or the heartwarming thoughts of spending time with family and friends? This time of year might being memories flooding back to us. Think about a gift you received from someone who knows you better than you know yourself, or getting something that was your hearts desire. What is the ultimate gift?

Maybe Christmas is a hard time for you. The burdens, unmet expectations, and even abusive and toxic experiences might leave you wondering why celebrate anything? Your hope is gone, and it's tough even just to function and get through the holiday without breaking down.

No matter your circumstance, as a Christian, we get to look forward in celebration of Christmas, not for the worldly gifts, but for the greatest gift, God with us. Christ was born. God became man. That may seem like a weird thing to celebrate, but in light of what God's plan is - it's worth responding to. Christ became man so that He could bear our sins on a cross as our punishment, and died in our place - to save us. He takes the penalty of our sins and our punishment away, and all you have to do is believe and accept Him as lord of your life.

Christmas is the perfect time of year to stop and consider what is there to be hopeful in this world. Especially in an ever changing and dark day we live in right now. What brings hope for life? The Gift | Myrrh

Not only was myrrh used in biblical times for a perfume, it was also a painkiller. Remember in Mark 15:23 when Christ is hanging on the cross, the roman guards offer myrrh, and He didn’t take it. He wanted to take the punishment meant for us and he died feeling the full measure of our sin.

More significant, myrrh was used to prepare dead bodies for burial - it was known as the death spice. Later in John chapter 19, we see Joseph of Arimathea ask Pilate for Christ's body so that it could be wrapped and anointed for burial. It's a beautiful foreshadowing of Christ’s death on the cross as substitute for us, by bestowing Him with the death spice at His birth.

The Gift | Frankincense

Frankincense it was a standard tool of worship used it in sacrifice for the priest. It represents the priest who was the middleman between God and man as being set apart for service. Frankincense was also used to present a pleasing odor to God, and it symbolized the people obedience in worship.

As we look to why the Maji presented this to Christ, we see that He is our priest, our go between, our mediator to God the father on our behalf. Stay Positive

We see in Philippians that Paul's telling the church, in these remarkably awful times that we have right now, the way everyone is going to see Christ is through your gentleness and your grace. It's through the gentle grace that God has given us that we reciprocate that to everybody else. It's God through us. What are our social media interactions showing those around us?

It's almost like we have this arrogant notion that if we can kind of clean ourselves up good enough in the sight of the Lord, then maybe we can run from the bad stuff in this world. Paul's telling us in scripture to come to God with a grateful attitude, and that's something so key for our relationship with Him.

Our goal as Christians is not to avoid or eliminate unpleasant and tough circumstances, but to renew our minds, trust in God's goodness, and stay positive.
