Our mission is to reach everyone around us with the hope of Christ. We are a church founded on building strong families focused on impacting our community.
We want to show and receive God’s love to those around us, and we live that out practically everyday. We strive to bring hope by meeting physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of everyone we come in contact with. We love fiercely—like a family, because everyone is included and our Father loves us all. We’re building biblical community by seeking God’s Word, believing in His promises, and applying what we learn everyday.
Our hope is that you and your family find a home with us where you can learn, grow, live, and thrive in Christ Jesus. We’re a multi-generational church with something to offer everyone in your family. Join us for a Sunday morning worship service, and take the next step in your journey with us!

The Promised Spirit | Spirit, Power & The Church
In this message from Acts 1, we see the early church’s beginning and the promise Jesus made to every believer: you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes. We learn what it means to live in that power, walk in the Spirit, and allow God to lead us with boldness and clarity. This isn’t just history—it’s the start of a Spirit-led life that still applies today.
Key Insights:
1. The Holy Spirit isn’t an add-on. He’s the power source for everything God has called you to do.
2. You don’t need to wait for a second experience; the Spirit fills you at the moment of salvation.
3. The early church’s growth and boldness were driven by ordinary people empowered by the Spirit, and that includes you.
4. You choose daily to walk in the Spirit or silence Him. One leads to life. The other leads to frustration.

What if God Said Yes? | Summer of Psalms
From Psalm 37, we’re challenged to consider what it looks like to delight in the Lord, commit our ways to Him, and live out our purpose with bold trust. This message offers five practical principles for walking in spiritual alignment and reminds us that real transformation begins when we say yes to God’s power, not just His blessings.
Key Insights:
1. Delighting in the Lord aligns your desires with God’s, shaping your prayers into His purpose.
2. True purpose is not stumbled into, it’s committed to and entrusted to God.
3. Passion driven by the Holy Spirit remains steady even when circumstances are unstable.
4. Saying yes to God requires surrender, not just intention.
5. Your spiritual alignment always precedes your clarity around calling and purpose.

Great God, Glad People, Global Purpose | Summer of Psalms
In this episode, we explore Psalm 67 and what it means to receive God's blessing with purpose. You'll learn how worship connects to missions, why global outreach matters, and how to begin each day with a simple prayer that aligns your heart with God's mission. Whether you're new to faith or seeking deeper purpose, this message will inspire you to live with intention.
5 Take Aways:
1. God blesses His people so they can be a blessing to others locally and globally.
2. Worship is both the reason we go on mission and the fuel that keeps us going.
3. A daily prayer of burden, opportunity, and boldness (the BOB prayer) can help you live with gospel intentionality.
4. Every believer has a role to play in God's mission even if you're not called to travel far.
5. We serve a personal God who meets us where we are and sends us out with purpose.

Courage that Endures | Summer of Psalms
This message explores Psalm 46 as a blueprint for enduring courage. We’re reminded that our strength doesn’t come from circumstances—it comes from the God who is unshakable. Whether you're in a season of chaos or calm, this sermon points you to the source of true peace and resilience: God’s faithful presence.
You'll hear how:
1. God’s presence is what makes us unshakable, not our circumstances.
2. Fear isolates, paralyzes, and distorts, but faith realigns us with God’s truth.
3. Courage flows from knowing and remembering who God is, not from having all the answers.
4. True breakthrough happens not through control, but through surrender.
5. The invitation to 'be still and know' is not about inactivity, it’s about trust.

Life Lessons from Hitting Rock Bottom | Summer of Psalms
This message from Psalm 51 takes us through David’s rock bottom moment and shows how God responds to confession, honesty, and a heart ready for change. We explore five lessons from David’s life that point us toward hope, healing, and renewed purpose. If you’ve ever wondered whether God still wants to use you after failure, the answer is yes.
Key Insights:
1. Healing always starts with God's mercy, not our effort.
2. True restoration begins with owning our sin instead of hiding or justifying it.
3. Sin is first and foremost against God—even before it affects others.
4. Forgiveness is real, but some consequences of sin still shape our journey.
5. God doesn’t just restore us—He still chooses to use us after failure.

There is Joy in the SECOND CHANCES | Summer of Psalms
Psalm 32 shows us that the path to joy isn’t found in perfection but in confession. Through David’s story, we learn how guilt can be a gift, honesty leads to healing, and grace is always available.
Key Insights
1. Guilt can be a gift when it leads us back to the heart of God.
2. Joy returns when we stop covering sin and start confessing it honestly.
3. True confession involves more than admitting—we align our hearts and change direction.
4. Restoration begins when we stop blaming others and own our decisions.
5. God has already seen you at your worst, and He’s still offering forgiveness and freedom.
Scripture: Psalms 32 (https://www.bible.com/bible/59/PSA.32.ESV)
Whether you’ve messed up big or small, this message will encourage you to stop running and step back into the arms of the One who already paid the price.

Can I Really Be Happy | Summer of Psalms
This message from Psalm 1 explores what it means to live a truly blessed and joyful life. We’re reminded that happiness isn’t something we chase—it’s something we grow when we’re rooted in truth. Learn how meditating on God's Word and anchoring your life in His presence creates a foundation for joy in every season.
Key Insights:
1. Happiness isn’t circumstantial—it’s rooted in a relationship with God through His Word.
2. When we delight in God’s truth, we develop joy that sustains us through all seasons.
3. True freedom isn’t about doing whatever we want—it’s about being anchored to our Creator.
4. Your thoughts, behaviors, and closest influences shape your joy more than your situation does.
5. Lasting happiness grows when we engage with God’s Word and God’s people consistently.

Happiness isn’t circumstantial—it’s rooted in a relationship with God through His Word.

When we delight in God’s truth, we develop joy that sustains us through all seasons.

True freedom isn’t about doing whatever we want—it’s about being anchored to our Creator.

Your thoughts, behaviors, and closest influences shape your joy more than your situation does.

Lasting happiness grows when we engage with God’s Word and God’s people consistently.

Peace in the Pieces: Finding True Peace in Every Area of Our Lives
In this sermon, we look at the story of Peter walking on water and what it teaches us about anxiety, surrender, and spiritual peace. Even in the chaos of the storm, Jesus invites us to trust Him.
Walk away with a better understanding of:
1. Obedience doesn’t exempt us from storms—sometimes it leads us straight into them.
2. Peace isn’t found in perfect conditions—it’s found in the presence of Jesus.
3. Fear thrives in the “what ifs,” but peace comes from meditating on what is.
4. Distraction, not disaster, is often what takes us down.
5. Surrender doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it means you’ve given it to the only One who can carry it.
Key Scripture: Matthew 14:22 (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/MAT.14.22)
This message unpacks how peace isn’t about perfect conditions but about Jesus stepping into the boat with us. Whether you’re in a storm, coming out of one, or about to walk into one, you’ll find encouragement and hope to keep your focus on Christ.

<itunes:subtitle>What does patience look like in your life? In today’s message from the book of James, we dive into the profound connection between faith and patience. We explore how Godly patience is not just about waiting, but about trusting—looking back on God's faithfulness, looking forward to His promises, and looking up for His strength. Through the examples of the farmer, the prophets, and the life of Job, we see how patience develops perseverance in the midst of life's trials. This kind of patience grows when we stand firm in faith, even when things seem uncertain.

Are you facing challenges that test your patience? Today’s message offers insight into how you can deepen your faith, build perseverance, and discover how God is full of compassion and mercy even in the waiting.
We want to Today, we dive into a vital question: Are we truly living in line with God's will? In this message, we explore what it means to have an active, ongoing commitment to do the will of God. As we reflect on the teachings of James, we'll unpack the four common attitudes people have toward God's will—ignoring it, denying it, disobeying it, or faithfully doing it.
We’ll also consider what God’s will looks like in our lives: being radically saved, controlled by the Holy Spirit, pursuing a pure life, and submitting to His authority. Ultimately, a life in step with God's will is not just about knowing what is right—it's about living it out in every moment, every decision.
Where do you stand in your journey? Have you surrendered your life to follow God's will? If you’re ready to take the next step, we'd love to connect with you, answer your questions, and pray with you. Feel free to reach out, and remember—you’re never walking this journey alone.
Join us today and learn how you can align your life with God’s purpose and discover true fulfillment. To take the next step in your faith journey, visit burnthickory.com/next.

Your words hold incredible power! They can uplift, guide, and praise—but they can also harm, deceive, and destroy. As we dive deeper into the book of James, we’ll uncover one of our greatest tools: the tongue. Just like a small rudder steering a massive ship, our words reflect our hearts' true direction. Together, we'll explore how the tongue reveals our relationship with Christ and wields immense power over our lives. The challenge? Acknowledging its influence and the ripple effects it has on everything around us. However, when we surrender it to God, the tongue transforms into a powerful instrument for honoring Him and guiding others. Join us on this journey as we discover how to tame the tongue and realize we can't do it alone.

Attending versus membership: why should someone become a member of the church? What does it truly offer? Today’s sermon will show the significance of standing behind and belonging to a church community. God invites us not just to attend but to engage and grow within His family fully. As we explore the teachings of Jesus in the book of Matthew, we’ll see His passion for the church and understand why being an active part of a local church is essential for our spiritual well-being. The church is not just a building; it's a called-out body of believers. Join us as we look at scripture and the heart of the church and learn how to deeply root ourselves in a community that embodies God's love and calling for each of us.

Words are easy, but are your actions telling a different story? As we continue our journey through the book of James, we're covering a powerful lesson: the connection between belief and action. James reminds us that faith without works is not just stagnant—it's lifeless. It's not enough to simply profess our faith; we must pursue a growing, thriving faith that propels us to act, serve, and uplift those around us. We'll explore three types of faith—dead, demonic, and saving—and reflect on how true, growing faith can spark true transformations in our lives. Together, we'll see the benefit of striving for a faith that's so much more than the words we speak and where we will see the true fruit produced when our faith aligns with our words and motivates our actions. We can’t wait to worship and grow with you!
Join us for an online or on-campus Sunday morning worship service, and take the next step in your journey with us!

Love your neighbor as yourself. But how do we truly embrace this calling when differences arise? What if we find ourselves prioritizing or brushing off others, whether a coworker or even a family member, because of how we view them? This morning, as we continue our journey through the book of James, we invite you to reflect with us on the theme of favoritism. Together, we’ll uncover how favoritism can challenge our understanding of love and community and how it can steer us away from the grace we are called to embody. Join us in this exploration as we seek to align our hearts with God's vision of love, mercy, and justice for everyone. Let's walk boldly in our faith, celebrating diversity and unity without bias.
Our service to the King must be centered around some counter cultural truths:
That Jesus is the only savior worth following, that Jesus is the only pure example of what glorifies God, and that Jesus calls us to get of the throne of self-advancement and become a true servant.
In God's kingdom, the standard of greatness is measured in service, not in authority or in accomplishment. We see this throughout Mark as well as in Philippians...
Phil. 2:1-8 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
Mark 10:43-45 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Pastor Alan opens scripture and shows us that we can take heart, and trust in God because His word, His nature, and His promises are unchanging and true. We are commanded to not look to our own understanding, comprehension, discernment, or insight, but to God’s. “Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord but serve the Lord with all your heart. Only fear the Lord and serve Him in truth with all your heart." – 1 Samuel 12:20
As we learn to surrender and trust in God’s will, we can learn to walk in His ways – the way Psalms 119:105 says – “Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."

Remember the anticipation as a child of what gifts would await us on Christmas morning or the heartwarming thoughts of spending time with family and friends? This time of year might being memories flooding back to us. Think about a gift you received from someone who knows you better than you know yourself, or getting something that was your hearts desire. What is the ultimate gift?
Maybe Christmas is a hard time for you. The burdens, unmet expectations, and even abusive and toxic experiences might leave you wondering why celebrate anything? Your hope is gone, and it's tough even just to function and get through the holiday without breaking down.
No matter your circumstance, as a Christian, we get to look forward in celebration of Christmas, not for the worldly gifts, but for the greatest gift, God with us. Christ was born. God became man. That may seem like a weird thing to celebrate, but in light of what God's plan is - it's worth responding to. Christ became man so that He could bear our sins on a cross as our punishment, and died in our place - to save us. He takes the penalty of our sins and our punishment away, and all you have to do is believe and accept Him as lord of your life.
Christmas is the perfect time of year to stop and consider what is there to be hopeful in this world. Especially in an ever changing and dark day we live in right now. What brings hope for life? What do we have to look forward to? If you have nothing to hope for, then take time to listen to this message, about Jesus Christ and what He has done. He wants you to be saved. He died for your sin. You can call our prayer hotline - 770-590-0372, or reach out by taking the next step - https://www.burnthickory.com/next. Someone will reach out to you.

Not only was myrrh used in biblical times for a perfume, it was also a painkiller. Remember in Mark 15:23 when Christ is hanging on the cross, the roman guards offer myrrh, and He didn’t take it. He wanted to take the punishment meant for us and he died feeling the full measure of our sin.
More significant, myrrh was used to prepare dead bodies for burial - it was known as the death spice. Later in John chapter 19, we see Joseph of Arimathea ask Pilate for Christ's body so that it could be wrapped and anointed for burial. It's a beautiful foreshadowing of Christ’s death on the cross as substitute for us, by bestowing Him with the death spice at His birth.

Frankincense it was a standard tool of worship used it in sacrifice for the priest. It represents the priest who was the middleman between God and man as being set apart for service. Frankincense was also used to present a pleasing odor to God, and it symbolized the people obedience in worship.
As we look to why the Maji presented this to Christ, we see that He is our priest, our go between, our mediator to God the father on our behalf. The Maji knew the Jesus was the ultimate high priest as foretold in scripture. You can accept Jesus today as your savior by taking the next step - burnthickory.com/next

We see in Philippians that Paul's telling the church, in these remarkably awful times that we have right now, the way everyone is going to see Christ is through your gentleness and your grace. It's through the gentle grace that God has given us that we reciprocate that to everybody else. It's God through us. What are our social media interactions showing those around us?
It's almost like we have this arrogant notion that if we can kind of clean ourselves up good enough in the sight of the Lord, then maybe we can run from the bad stuff in this world. Paul's telling us in scripture to come to God with a grateful attitude, and that's something so key for our relationship with Him.
Our goal as Christians is not to avoid or eliminate unpleasant and tough circumstances, but to renew our minds, trust in God's goodness, and stay positive.

Church is not an event. A church is not a necessarily a location. The church is the group of redeemed people that God wants to speak to and through, and as a result of that, the church is the hope of the world. Church should be a refuge for broken, a place to find healing, and learn of the promises of God. We enable that by linking our lives intentionally together and we strive to be known.
If you are looking for a church to call home, to be known and loved, to be taught and find refuge, then consider joining Burnt Hickory. Take the next step and discover what membership looks like – www.burnthickory.com/next
